How does meditation work?
During a silent breath or mantra meditation, both the breath and the sound will gradually become quieter and quieter and quieter. You’ll experience subtler levels of the thinking process, and the process of thought might even seem to stop for a time. This is a natural process. We can’t think our way to this experience, or control it.
During meditation, our minds become quiet allowing our bodies to gain the deep rest necessary to dissolve stress and fatigue. Although meditation can be a way to experience inner silence, this comes about not by eliminating thoughts, but by becoming aware and spending time in the silence that is naturally present in the mind along with the thoughts – sometimes called the gap between the thoughts.
What are the benefits?
Meditation is recommended by almost every health professional because it provides a proven way to give your mind and body a rest and to reduce stress. It's like taking a time out, but it is really a time in.
Today, people are using meditation to treat anxiety, burnout, stress, and depression. the practice has also been used to help people quit smoking, conquer drug and alcohol addictions, reduce blood pressure, relieve arthritis pain, and reduce symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome and menopause.
Meditation also aids in lowering heart rate and blood pressure by slowing down breathing, which reduces the amount of oxygen needed.
Those who meditate report higher levels of self-esteem, a calmer manner, a clearer mind, being able to be in the present, making better choices, clarifying their intentions and desires, increased intuition, and finding a sense of well-being.
And along with the many psychological and physical benefits, when you learn meditation you also receive spiritual benefits, because through meditation, you connect with your who you really are, some call this your higher self — where energy, creativity and inner awareness are truly your natural state of being.
Rarely is there a reason not to meditate. Read more about the benefits of regular meditation practice.
